RUMOR CONTORL: TEMPTATION (SALE OF THE CENTURY) IN THE USA? |
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 |
There was a teaster posting on Craigslist a bit ago about a show involving shopping looking for contestants. It was from a "Major Production Company" and was a "Popular Game Show", which meant it had to be established at some point. Now comes this new posting.
NEW CRAIGSLIST POSSIBLE TEMPTATION POSTING
People must fly to Australia. It involves shopping with extreme discounts from money you earn. This basically HAS to be Temptation, doesn't it? I really hope this is, because Temptation is one of the best game shows that has been on TV in a very long time. For those of you that don't know, "Temptation" is the revival of "Sale of the Century", an old 80s game show, currently shown in Australia and recently sold to South Africa. Unless I'm completely wrong, and please tell me if I am, this is really looking like "Temptation" is coming to America. |

Could thiis mean GSN might get the Reg Grundy rights?? Time will tell!!

Only women? I hope this isn't another Lifetime venture...
-
I'll say you're wrong for one reason: women only? I can't think what else it could be, but restricting this to women only is confusing.
-
Whatever it is, it's something, and something is always more interesting than nothing.
I wonder what it is with staging shows in the countries from which the show is derived. (There has to be a better way to say that)
-
Probably a production-cost issue; it may actually be cheaper to use the existing sets and production staff even accounting for the overseas travel than it would be to construct a new set and hire new staffers Stateside, at least when the future prospects of a series are in question. This was GSN's rationale for taping the first "season" of Lingo in the Netherlands, after all, and I know that Bill Rafferty once did a pilot for an American version (Run for the Money of a British game show (Going for the Gold) that flew everyone involved to the UK to use the standing British set and facilities.
It's entirely possible this could be something else, so I refuse to be taken in just yet... but it does sound like $ale/Temptation. Either way I hope it pans out, as we could use a few new game shows on the air over here.
-
My guess: Negative. This does not sound like an ad for a US version of Temptation.
Reasons: -Sale of the Century/Temptation is not a shopping show, it's a quiz show, especially in the show's current form with much of the consumeristic trappings toned down. This game sounds a LOT more consumeristic than the current Temptation format...or any other incarnation of the Sale of the Century format, as a matter of fact.
-Why are they looking for women who are between 30 and 40 years old? If this were Temptation, a show that FremantleMedia would be more likely to want to attract younger viewers to, why go with older contestants?
No, unless someone REALLY stupid is driving (and I'm talking CS'01, TJW'90, TTD'90 stupid), this is most likely an original show.
-
I think it could be Temptation/Sale...notice the word "Old-school" and "discounted prizes."
Currently, what other Australian game show is running something that has these elements in place?
-
The listing may SAY it's "old school" but in my eyes, it looks like a totally diffrent animal here. Besides, I don't see the word "quiz" anywhere in that listing.
If it does come here, there are only 3 possible spots for channels. Lifetime, Oxygen or WE! as far as I'm concerned. Maybe my oldest niece should try out for this. To me, she's a "shop-a-holic".
